A Taste of the Tales of Rebbe Nachman of Breslov

Taught by Rabbi Ariel Burger

Unique in the Jewish canon, symbolic and evocative, these tales, told in the last years of the Hasidic master Rebbe Nachman's life (1772-1810), are both accessible and rich with meaning.

Presented as folk or fairy tales, they convey Jewish wisdom by subtly referencing earlier Jewish sources, from Biblical texts through Rabbinic literature and mysticism. We will explore some of Rebbe Nachman's teachings about stories, as well as the stories themselves, paying careful attention to the dialogue between the tales, our own responses, and Jewish teachings.

Through this exploration, we will encounter new possibilities for how we perceive Torah, Jewish life, and ourselves.
